2019 French Cup Final
Rennes came from behind to overcome a 2-0 deficit, against Paris-Saint Germain, to force extra-time [2-2] and finally won on the penalties shootouts 6-5. PSG conclude a rather pathetic season for the club’s standards with no cup title and an early exit at the round of 16 Champions League stage.
Fortunately for the emirates owners, they were able to win another Ligue 1 title as the club dominated the domestic league from start to finish. Still, the ambitions every for the club is to win the Champions Leaguer and at the minimum to win it all in France [League and both Cups titles].
The failure of PSG this season puts into question coach Tuchel’s future. Praised in the beginning of the year, the German coach showed his limits since the dramatic elimination in the Champions League against Manchester United.
Coach Tuchel on losing the French Cup for the first time in 5 consecutive years:
“We let Rennes back into the game, but I don’t know why. It’s very disappointing because we lost the second half 1-0. We didn’t show the right mentality to win this match. We really wanted to win this match and I think it was possible.
We made a perfect start and we should have gone on with it, but we let them back into the game. Our intensity dropped, our rhythm dropped and then it was 2-1 and we didn’t show the right mentality. I am surprised but I can’t explain why.”
Neymar added:“I feel really bad after that. Losing always feels bad, especially when it’s a final. Everyone is sad, but we know what we did. We should have shown more out there on the pitch.
But there’s no point crying over spilt milk, it’s over now. I’m happy to have played today without pain. I think I played well, with a goal and an assist, but losing is a much more painful feeling.”
