Premier League week 1: Manchester United 4-0 West Ham United

Lukaku scores a brace as to start off the new EPL season and already proves why Manchester United got him over the summer.

Jose Mourinho is pleased with the perfect start to the season:

“I remember every second of the game. I don’t forget the ball hitting the bar at 2-0 and Diafra Sakho coming onto the pitch. In spite of speaking about Sakho at half-time, he was free and almost scored. If the score was 2-1, the last 20 minutes, instead of enjoying trying to score more goals, it would have been about not conceding the equaliser, for not losing two points. Yes, we did very good things but the thing I’m more pleased about is the confidence levels in the team and individually. The confidence to play good football.

First of all, they [Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic] are obviously top players. Secondly, they’ve played for years and years in the Premier League so it’s nothing new for them – only the club and the colleagues, not even the manager as they worked with me before. I think they showed that stability really that Victor Lindelof, for example, doesn’t have now as he’s just arrived from a completely different environment.

I want to win matches and, obviously, the best way to win matches is to score more goals. Pre-match, I was asked about being more offensive than last season but we were offensive last season. It’s about scoring goals. We had similar performances last season with less quality and not the same confidence levels but we had very attacking performances, where we couldn’t score the goals to win.”
