USMNT 3-2 Iceland
Jurgen Klinsmann on the win and the training camp in January to get his squad ready:
“What I’ve tried to do over the last three weeks of training [at the national team’s annual ‘January’ camp] – and I hope that’s the reason I was able to get the start was I laid a good foundation that the coaching staff liked, and I’ll continue to do that.
I don’t think you want to hang your head on one game, whether it be good or bad, and I’m not going to do that. “The first half was a little rough for me. I was a little timid at first. I was too afraid to make a mistake. I think that was, like, my downfall, but as the second half went on, I was more committed to getting forward, helping my team in every way possible.”
“We have some issues as an outside-back position, on the international level. We know Kellyn can play left or right, but also as a 6. He impressed in training, he was very calm, and was very mature for his age. And that was his opportunity then, [and] he was rewarded for these three weeks of really good work.”
LA Galaxy’s players Gyasi Bardes also commented: “The first half, I thought the link up play with Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore was great,” he said. “It was nice to be a part of that first goal of the year, but there were spells, you know, that header, I headed down, I headed back where it came from but it took a good skid on the surface and bounced over the crossbar, which is unlucky as a striker.”
