2019 Gold Cup

The US beat Curacao 1-0 and will face their next test on Wednesday night against a team they know well, when they face off against Jamaica for a spot in the Gold Cup final.

U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter returned to the starting XI that began the opening pair of Group D matches for the USA, while handing the captain’s armband to Christian Pulisic for the first time in 2019 – the ninth different player to captain the U.S. this year as Berhalter continues to spread leadership duties among the players.

Coach Berhalter on the difficult win:

“They were a good team, they had some very skilled players and kept the ball really well. Coming off the bench I was just trying to come in and bring some energy. We were defending a lot of the time.

The interesting thing about this game and when you look at both in Copa América and Gold Cup and look at these quarterfinal matches, they’re all tight matches. I think you guys wanted us to go out here and beat ‘em 5-0 but we knew it was going to be a difficult game.

What I’d say from our group is we had the opportunity early to put a couple goals in and we didn’t do that and we kept them hanging around.

Despite the tone in here we’re happy with the result of this game and that should be said. I’m proud of the guys for their effort and now we move on to Nashville.”
