2018 MLS Cup Final
In front of 73,000 fans all cheering for the home team, Atlanta United won their first ever MLS Cup and beat Timbers 2-0. It was a fantastic season for the club in its second season as MLS members.
All season-long Tata Martino’s men showed grit and strength to overcome any difficult situation when they lost the Supporters’ Shield to NYRB for example. But Atlanta United have the best goal scorer in the league in Martinez. He concluded a phenomenal season with another goal to launch his team at the 39th minute.
In the second half Atlanta did not slow down and then added q quick second goal from Escobar at the 54th. The Portland Timbers did all they could but had no chance for a comeback.
Reactions from Atlanta United side:
Club President Darren Eales.
“Tonight, this is going to resonate around the world. because you had 73,000 creating an amazing atmosphere, seeing a team that’s exciting and dynamic to watch, and that’s great for the sport in this country.”
Captain Parkhurst on a very special night:
“I’ve dreamed of what it felt like to be in the locker room with the champagne. I’ve heard it before from the other locker room. It was worth the wait. It was special to be in there. I can’t wait to party tonight. I think Atlanta took everybody by surprise a little bit
You never know exactly the type of success any team is going to have. But when you’ve got an owner committed like Arthur and the resources he has put into this team, it’s a recipe for success. It was a perfect time for Atlanta to get a soccer team. It’s a melting pot city and people have just gravitated toward us. And it’s because of the atmosphere here tonight. People love being a part of it.”
According to Nielsen media research, Saturday’s MLS Cup broadcast by FOX drew a 1.2 metered market rating, the highest number for the game since 1998.
