Philadelphia Union will return home to Philadelphia on Thursday, March 10, as the team closes their final 2011 preseason training camp in Heraklion, Crete, presented by Colonial Marble & Granite. The Union will continue to train at host Ergotelis F.C.’s facilities for the remaining of their time in Greece, and will have the weekend off upon their arrival in Philadelphia.
The Union technical staff complied with Major League Soccer regulations by submitting their roster and budget, in accordance with the March 1 Roster Compliance Deadline. The Union announced the signings of goalkeeper Thorne Holder and midfielder Ryan Richter, as well as the decisions to waive midfielder J.T. Noone and forward Nick Zimmerman.
The Union played two Greek teams in a 48 hour span last week, finishing with a 1-1 draw against Super League side Ergotelis F.C. on Monday, February 28, followed by a 5-0 victory over Third Division club Hersonissos F.C. on Wednesday, March 2.
The club also announced details for their first U.S. Open Cup play-in match. The Union will visit D.C. United at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md., on Wednesday, April 6. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. EST, and tickets are available through D.C. United’s front office starting today.
