2016 MLS Cup Final: Toronto FC 0-0 Seattle Sounders [4-5 on penalty shootouts]
Competing in the club’s first-ever MLS Cup, Seattle Sounders defeated Toronto FC on Saturday night in front of a record crowd of 36,045 at BMO Field in Major League Soccer’s 21st championship match. The Rave Green claimed their first MLS Cup title via penalty shootout following 120 minutes, with Stefan Frei standing tall in goal and defender Roman Torres netting the winning penalty to seal the victory.

“I’m proud, I’m happy, I’m thankful for the opportunity that [Sounders owners] Adrian [Hanauer] and Joe [Roth] gave me. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. I’m sure 10 years from now, I’ll be able to really reflect and soak this in because it was a tremendous moment and one that may never come around again.
I’m awfully proud of those guys. They’re obviously very happy in that locker room. I’m happy for the traveling support. I’m happy for the fans that couldn’t make the trip out here and see the game live. I think it’s going to take a while to sink in.”
Coach Toronto FC – Vanney is disappointed with the result:
“It wasn’t meant to be. There are some days where a team can dominate all they want, but the ball just won’t go in the net. We wanted to end it before penalties. Honestly, it was bad luck today. It wasn’t meant to be for us this year.
We talked about that before the game: be fearless, go after things. We did that. We were strong and brave; went after the game from the first minute right up until the 120th minute. On a different night, you get a goal. If you get the first one, you probably get a few more. But that’s the game; that’s how it goes.”
