Champions League match day 1
Real Madrid started their Champions League title defense campaign with an impressive wins over AS Roma 3-0. As a reminder AS Roma reached the semis last year and eliminated FC Barcelona in the quarterfinals.
Mission accomplished
Isco, Bale and Mariano are the three goal scorers for the champions and they can now focus on La Liga to try to catch FC Barcelona and Messi at the top.
Coach Lopetegui on the match:
“We put in a great performance against a tough side who were just one goal from being in the final last year and have invested in their squad this season. We played very well and deserved the three points by creating a lot of chances and we’re pleased.
This is just the beginning but we got all three points and played a good match. Now we have to move on from thinking about the Champions League and turn our attentions to the next game.
We’ve been working for three months now and the team is growing and getting better. We have to keep working hard and we’ve got another demanding fixture in three days’ time.
I’ve got very good players, with a fantastic attitude and who train like animals. That helps the team keep improving and growing. That’s the best way to approach all the competitions”.
Midfielder Modric added:
“We played as a team and put in a good display from the off, creating loads of chances. I think we could have got more goals. It was a very complete performance.
I feel better, it’s to be expected after playing at the World Cup with so much mental and physical fatigue. I’m feeling better every day and I hope I can get back to the levels I showed last season, playing like tonight.
Casemiro, Kroos and I have been playing together for more than three years. I feel comfortable with them, but all the guys who come in are contributing a lot and helping the team.
We’ve been together for a long time and know each other with our eyes closed, but Ceballos and other guys are doing a fantastic job.
