Ligue 1 week 23
Paris Saint-Germain are no longer undefeated in the French Ligue 1. Olympique Lyon came from behind to win this game 2-1. The result does not change much on top of Ligue 1.
PSG remain with a solid 10-point margin but shows Lyon has talented players and can compete with one of the best teams in Europe as Champions League Round of 16 is looming for both clubs. Lyon will face FC Barcelona and PSG will play Manchester United.
Lyon coach, Genesio comments on the big win:
“There are a lot of emotions after a match like this. Antho (Lopes) was decisive in key moments… There has been real progression, we’re defending better.
The game plan was simple but it had to be done on the pitch. We decided to pressure them high up. There is a lot of exposure to playing this way, but the chances are you’ll win, like we did tonight.
We have talented players who can create danger from all over the pitch. We’ve scored less than last season, but we’ve created more chances. Moussa (Dembélé) is full of confidence right now, which weighs heavily on the opposing team… We knew we could beat them.”
PSG coach, Thomas Tuchel on the first loss of the season:
“I expected a difficult game as Lyon have a lot of quality and are through to the Last 16 of the Champions League. The first half was really tough. We gave the ball away a lot, took bad decisions, especially in key moments.
After half-time, we controlled the game well. I’m happy with the second half. We had chances, but weren’t clinical enough.”
Midfielder Draxler added:
“Lyon played well in the first half and pressed a lot. They’re a world-class team. They perhaps deserved to win but we also created chances. A draw would perhaps have been fair. It’s our first defeat of the season in Ligue 1, but we’ll continue.
There are still a lot of games to come. My 100th with Paris? Unfortunately we didn’t win, but I’m proud to have reached that mark with this great club.”
