Ligue 1 week 9
The French Ligue 1 is likely to be over already after just nine games. The era of dominance just begins with the teenage striker Kylian Mbappé. Against Lyon, the Frenchman scored a treble in just nine minutes and added a fourth goal four minutes later. The final was 5-0.
Is it the new Pelé? The king himself praises the youngster during the FIFA World Cup Russia. At only 19 years old, Mbappé is the most promising player we have seen in decades since Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Paris Saint-Germain set new League record
With nine wins in a row to start the championship, PSG set a new record in France for best start ever and can extend this lead to 10 the next match against Amiens at home.
Coach Thomas Tuchel on the win:
“It was a completely crazy match! When you have the chance to set a new record, it’s never easy! Lyon played an excellent first half. It was very tough, we lacked structure and confidence and we lost a lot of ball. The reaction was incredible in the second half. Winning 5-0 is extraordinary.”
Captain Thiago Silva on the record:
“This is a special record for us. Winning the first nine matches of the season was not easy. It was very important but, today, the most important thing was our mentality, because Lyon really played very well. We deserved this win and we deserve to set a new record in this championship.”
Kylian Mbappé on his special night:
“We are very happy, it was a great match! We are very proud to have won this match and we really wanted the victory, to make Ligue 1 history. Now we are going to head off with our national teams, but this win will stay with us. We did the job.
At the start of the second half, I had a few chances that I didn’t put away. I didn’t doubt myself, because the most important thing for an attacker is to create chances. I knew that if I kept going, I would score. And my teammates provided a few perfect assists!”
