MLS 2017 week 1: Atlanta United 1-2 New York Red Bulls

For its first game in MLS history, Atlanta United packed 55,000 fans against NYRB. Coach by the renown Argentinian Tata Martino who coach the Albiceleste and FC Barcelona, the hosts lifted up the all stadium with their first goal ever in MLS at the 24th minute mark. Nonetheless, a veteran New York Red Bulls team found the resources to rally and win the game late.

Scoring Summary:

ATL – Yamil Asad (Tyrone Mears) 25’

NY – Danny Royer 1 (Sacha Kljestan) 76’

ATL – Own Goal (Anton Walkes) 82’

Coach Marsch talks about the changes he made at the break to win it in the second half:

“We talked about it at halftime just giving a little bit more, being a little bit clearer tactically, making a couple adjustments but being a little bit sharper physically, putting more into the game and now taking the crowd out play by play. I thought for the most part, in the second half the effort was really good, obviously, a great comeback and a lot of spirit within the team.

Obviously there’s a long way to go until we get to our peak performance, but I think there are a lot of good things we can take away. More importantly, the best thing we can take away is our will to win and our will to keep fighting.”
