Premier League gameweek 9: Chelsea 4-0 Manchester United
There was no gift for Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge, as his team got humiliated by his former club. MUFC did not exist and certainly did not come to play and go home with a striking defeat.
The level shown by United can start to worry the fans for the proclaimed favorites of the Premier League this season. All the monies invested in players this offseason have not seemed to mesh yet… but will it after all?
Coaches react after the game:
Antonio Conte (Chelsea): ‘It was very important for our ambition. After defeats against two great teams, Liverpool and Arsenal, it was very important to have a good answer and win against a very strong team like Man United. I asked my players to start very strong and show quickly our desire to win this game, not only our fans but above all our opponent. It happened because we scored after 30 seconds.
The most important thing was that we continued to play, and to try to score the second goal. It happened and I’m very happy. Now we must continue. Manchester United is the past for me. We must be concentrated on Wednesday. It’s important to recover the energy and to prepare for another difficult game.
We are working very hard, I see my players every day with the right commitment and work-rate. We took three points and we won against a strong team. This type of win usually increases your confidence. You trust your work more.’
Jose Mourinho (Manchester United): “Everything went wrong from minute one. After that, everything was against us in the game. I spoke with the players in a very honest way at half-time. I told them we had to try, because in the end, to lose 2-0 or 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0, in terms of points, it’s the same. It’s not the same in terms of feelings, but in terms of points it is the same.
I was very honest with them and I told them that we have to try, and we are going to try, but we have a risk, because now this is what Chelsea wants. Chelsea wants to defend and then to go on the counter-attack. If we score, they are in trouble, but we have a risk, and then we had chances to score – we didn’t – they go there, they score and they kill the game.”
