Stadium design around the world has become somewhat of an art form. With award-winning architects and designers looking to come up with the latest and greatest concepts in stadium style it seems that there were even a number of somewhat incredible looking football stadiums that simply never came to fruition. Here’s just a few of these ambitious projects that never got off the ground.

LIVERPOOL

They may be some attractive odds with Bethut bookmakers at the moment for Liverpool to end up in the top 4 this season but new manager Jurgen Klopp has certainly got his work cut out for the remainder of the campaign in order to drive his side to such a finish. At the end of their 2007 season however things were a little more settled at the club with a 3rd place finish and it was a time that also saw new plans revealed for a 60,000-seater stadium to be located near their current Anfield home. The modern £300 million rebuild was certainly unique however the plans were eventually scrapped and now future plans for a new stadium are once again in motion.

BARCELONA

It was incredibly ambitious to say the least but the Spanish club’s plans for an off-bay 150,000-seater stadium would have no doubt been worth every penny. The stadium was set to be built offshore and would be linked by a bridge from the neighbouring beach area. The visuals looked amazing but it did beg the question as to simply how practical would this stadium at sea actual be particularly for supporters and vehicles to make their way across. Plans for a new stadium have now been put to bed with the announcement of a £495 million Nou Camp revamp.

CHELSEA

In 2012 the Premier League side were on the lookout for suitable locations for a potential new stadium somewhere in West London, and that is when the blues became very keen on purchasing the old Battersea Power Station. The 60,000-seater stadium would have retained all the features and historical aspects of the old site which would have included preserving the four large chimneys in each corner of the new stadium. It would have certainly been a striking sight as shown in some of the design renderings put forward however the club eventually missed out at the bidding process.
