Copa America 2015 Final: Chile 0-0 Argentina (4-1 on penalties)
After 120 minutes of action, no team was able to score. The decision was to ne made on penalties. While Messi scored the first one, the next two Argentineans missed their penalty. Arsenal’s forward Alexis Sanchez converted the last penalty with a controlled Panenka and sent the all country into a wide celebration.
Jorge Sampaoli Chile coach:
“These players did a great job. They went out in search of this Copa. I didn’t see one play in the whole competition to suggest that Chile was not better than their rivals.
To have won the Copa América here in Chile, with the people euphoric… I want to say thank you to my players for allowing me to be part of that.
We were able to dominate with the ball against a powerful team like Argentina. Chile played a great game and we had the opportunity to win it over the 90 minutes. I take my hat off to these players.
“The penalties did us justice in the end because that was the right result. Chile offered more in the game than Argentina”.
Gerard Martino coach Argentina
“We didn’t play like we do usually and nor did Chile. The two teams had more success in neutralising each other than in creating. Argentina didn’t create much and Chile didn’t create much.
“I believe the two picked teams to neutralise the other. We played against the team that had scored the most goals and they didn’t create chances.
“It’s reciprocal. So it’s unfair to talk about why Argentina didn’t play like they usually do without asking why Chile didn’t play as they usually do.
“We controlled their players in midfield. We also controlled [Jorge] Valdivia and Alexis Sánchez. My recognition for Chile has been from day one, but if you ask me about today’s game, I believe Argentina should have won.”
