Chelsea grab big win at Lille thanks to William
Lampard’s initiation as coach has been difficult for the Blues. The club legend has had a rough start in the Premier League and lost first game of the Champions League to Valencia at home 1-0.
A reaction was expected and much needed against a team that lost its first game too. The game was very engaged with both teams aiming at the victory and a mindset to play their chances. Chelsea opened the scoreboard in the first half but then Lille equalized just 10 minutes later.
First points earned
We had to wait until the last quarter of the game to see a burst of brilliance from William who sent the ball into the net to give the London team their first points in the group stage this season. Ajax Amsterdam is looming next, having won their first two matches. It will another big game for Chelsea after the international break.
Coach Lampard on the result:
“There is a long way to go in the group but having lost against Valencia it put more importance on this game.
It’s such a tough place to come, anyone in the stadium would have felt that. The roof was on, the crowd were up for it, the speed in their team in a counter-attacking sense was very evident, something we had to be ready for.
Our performance was really good. We controlled a lot of the early periods of the game, we got our goal. Set-pieces are a problem for us and we have to keep working on that even more.
But the way we played, the chances we created away from home, the possession we had of the ball, meant we deserved to win. The young players are responding, and they have to keep doing that because this Champions League level is something else. They did well tonight and they can do even better.”
