CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS:
Bayern Munich 2-0 Juventus
Bayern Chairman – Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “It was a magnificent match. We can be extremely satisfied, not just with the result, but also with the way we played. That was our best game in the Champions League this season. Obviously, we had the chances to make it three, but it’s the result we wanted. We’ll travel to Turin feeling optimistic. Everyone in the team worked magnificently and we always played our football. It was a super evening of European football for us. We’ve put ourselves in a good position to go through, but the return will still be tough. We must avoid arrogance and complacency.”
Bayern Coach – Jupp Heynckes: “We prepared well, as you could see from our tactical approach. We disrupted their play and took Pirlo out of the game. Overall, we were brimming with confidence and played outstanding football, although you also have to be up for the fight. In the first instance, we’re pleased we’ve won against an Italian team while keeping a clean sheet. That was top-class football for long spells, and an impressive result against the reigning Italian champions, who look odds-on to retain their title.”
Juventus Coach – Antonio Conte:
“We were facing a great team, there’s no novelty there, one of the favourites to lift the trophy. Physically they’re very strong, they were tough in the tackle and fired up after losing last year’s final.
“Games like this can only help us grow and realise that we still have some way to go before we’re on a par with Europe’s top sides. Bayern spent €48 million just on Martinez last summer – that’s unthinkable for us.”
We have a league game against Pescara on Saturday and immediately after that we’ll focus on the return leg.
“Football is full of surprises and we won’t lie down till it’s over. We know that whatever happens we can already be proud of having come this far just 16 months after starting out together.
