FC Barcelona 1-1 Atletico Madrid.
The equation was pretty simple fof the Catalans. A victory by any score against the leader Atletico Madrid will give the championship to Barcelona. This game was a final ad Barcelona opened the score to lead 1-0 at the break. Atletico responded and tied the game early in the second half and never dropped another goal.
Barcelona conclude the season with no trophy. 90Soccer said not too long ago that Barceona will not win any trophy because a coach like Martino is not a good fit and he has not the good level to train the one of the best team in the world. Stats are here to confirm and Atletico Madrid is a well-deserved champion!
In between, coach Martino resigned form coaching position. A wise decision as he would have been sent off anyway…
Ex-coach Martino speaks:
“I profoundly lament the fact that I was not able to help the players to achieve the objectives of the Club. We tried with dignity,” he said. He then went on to congratulate the new league champions: “I congratulate Atlético Madrid because they were our great rival this season, they did a fantastic job and I’m certain they will continue to do well.”
“We admire them from afar, we admire them from within and I will continue to do so from now on because the following years will be good ones for them,” he said. “I don’t only admire them for their talent, but because they are good human beings. It has been an honour to lead this institution.”
Coach Atletico Simone explains his joy:
“It’s the work, which we never bargained with. We always try not to be committed to anyone and I believe the team always understood this, made it their own and I honestly think that today will be one of the most important days in the Club’s history. Going away from Barcelona being champions… Only joy”.
“Calm. It’s the best you can transmit to a group that was doing things right in the first half: calmness; because if we scored, it was going to be much harder for them. And so it happened, thank God, and after that there was a great collective effort. From Villa to Sosa, Raúl, Adrián, from all of the guys”.
