Arsenal rose to third in the table with their 1-0 win at Goodison Park on Wednesday as Thomas Vermaelen’s early header secured all three points on Merseyside.

Wenger’s team were forced to ride waves of pressure in the second period but stood strong to register their first league clean sheet since the beginning of February.

“It confirms the solidity of the team,” Wenger told Arsenal Player. “Especially when you go to Goodison Park where you know you will be under pressure and the crowd knows the game.

“To come back having not conceded I am very happy because we have shown signs of mastering situations and not panicking. Especially against a team that is top class on crosses and set-pieces.

“Usually people would not say Arsenal would not concede in circumstances like that so I am very pleased.”

Arsène Wenger revealed the following team news ahead of the Aston Villa game:
on team news ahead of Villa…
It is difficult to say but I don’t think we have any big problems at all from Everton, just bumps and bruises as ever after a committed game. But no injuries.

on having just one midweek game to go this season…
We have time to recover between games now. I felt that the period was even a bit long between Newcastle and Everton so you lose a bit of an edge off the competition sometimes.

But overall because they are big games, the players focus and everybody knows the importance of the games. That is why the focus is more natural. Some days you can switch off and lose your competitive edge a bit.
