2019 Champions League semifinal – first leg

Real Madrid, Juventus and now Tottenham all have endured home loss in front of Ajax Amsterdam this season.

This is only the 5th time in European Cups history that a club is able to record three consecutive wins in the elimination phases. The last three who accomplished this performance ended up winning the trophy (Liverpool 1984, Bayern 2013 and Real Madrid 2018).

The Dutch scored an early goal in London and managed to keep the result [1-0] before the return leg in Amsterdam. The cinderella story continues for a hyper-talented young team as they are only a step away from the Final in Madrid on June 1st at the Wanda Metropolitano.

For the Spurs, they will have to produce another high-level performance and score goal in Amsterdam. It will not be impossible but can they defend their net too properly as they have allowed many goals way from home lately.

Tottenham coach, Pochettino, comments on the loss:

“We cannot afford to start the game in the way that we started. That was the key point. They showed more energy than us, they were fresh and more pro-active than us. Then conceding the goal we conceded, that was tough.

“The second half gave us the hope to win the game. We showed that we can beat them. I really trust in my team. We are going to be there and compete in the best way.

In the second half, the reaction was very good and we pushed them. The second half was very competitive and we created a few chances, not enough to score, but the tie is so open and we need to go there next week and try to score and win the game if we want be in the final.”
