Coaching session by André Villas-Boas

Having taken four points from their opening two league games of the 2011/12 season, Chelsea’s third league fixture was against newly-promoted Norwich at Stamford Bridge on 27 August 2011.

New Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas was confident his side would have a lot of possession and therefore decided to run a possession-focused coaching session on the Wednesday before the game. In his own words, Villas-Boas describes that session:

“Throughout the session we work on our possession principles focusing on our build-up play from the back and our mobility as a team. We also touch on the principles of our defensive organisation, working on the distance between players when we are not in possession and the use of offside”.

Chelsea went on to win 3-1 and enjoyed 69% of possession. And now, for the first time ever, soccer coaches all over the world can use that session with their team.

July’s Elite Soccer magazine (out now) features the Villas-Boas coaching session on possession principles which looks at technique, build-up play, mobility and defensive structure. It is an in-depth look at how André coaches and works with specific match situations in mind.

The session is clearly laid out in a series of diagrams to show coaches exactly what they should be doing at all points. A narrative runs alongside it, with André talking them through the key coaching aspects to look out for during the session.

For coaches who want to improve their team’s possession play and learn from one of the game’s most promising young managers, this coaching session is a must-have – and it is only available from Elite Soccer.

Elite Soccer can provide these first-hand coaching plans thanks to our partnership with the League Managers Association (LMA).  André joins a list of great coaches who have provided sessions for Elite Soccer that includes Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger, Roberto Mancini, Carlo Ancelotti, Roy Hodgson and Harry Redknapp.
