Wenger: ‘We never looked like losing’

Wigan started well against us on Saturday and they created some dangerous situations and surprised us in the opening stages.

But after the first 15 minutes we took control of the game and never looked like losing. Maybe Wigan came on strong in the first five minutes of the second half but overall we had a good team performance defensively and offensively.

The confidence is there at the moment and you could sense that in the way we played. I can only congratulate the team because they are growing and they are getting better and better. You can see there is something there to work on.

We have been pegged back by Wigan on two occasions in recent years and I had that in my memory when it was 2-0 and they started strongly in the second half.

But I just felt that on Saturday we had too much for them and we looked solid at the back. We didn’t lose any goals in the physical battles and therefore of course we were not under threat as much defensively.

We also shared the goals around and I am happy about that. It is good for the morale of the team and overall I know they can all take responsibility for that and not just Robin van Persie.

The fans were superb again and our job is of course to focus as much as we can do and deal with the good and the bad that comes our way. That goes for me as well – I just try to give my best for my club. When people are not happy of course I am not happy as well but it’s part of the job.

We are up to fifth in the Premier League and I’m confident we can go higher. When you look at the scores from the weekend, those in front of us like Chelsea, Tottenham and the Manchester teams all won. That means it will be down to who is the most consistent.
