Former Trinidad and Tobago stars Dwight Yorke and Shaka Hislop will be among a host of legends to have played professionally in England who will converge at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 10 and 11 to do battle for top honours in the inaugural British Airways Football Legends six-a-side tournament.
The two day football extravaganza is the idea of the Barbados Tourism Authority’s Vice President for Marketing and Sales UK, Petra Roach. Funds raised will be donated to the National Sports Council Primary Schools Programme which develops youth football within primary schools and a healthy, disciplined and united society through greater participation and better opportunities in sport at all levels of society.
The Barbados Football Association is also set to be a beneficiary with a proportion of the funding also going towards its Youth Development Programme.
Some of the top clubs in England will take part including Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and a PFA All Star team. Yorke will line up for United alongside the likes of Andy Cole, Jesper Blomqvist, Quinton fortune, Ronny Johnsen and David May. Hislop meantime will be in the Newcastle side alongside Alan Shearer and Colombian Faustino Asprilla.
Chelsea’s team will include Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Di Matteo while Arsenal will have former Swedish international Stefan Schwarz in its team. All preliminary matches will be drawn in FA Cup style and will be played in ten minute halves.
