Manchester United surprised the bet365 odds by defeating Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 on Wednesday evening to progress into the last 16 of the Champions League.

If the reds avoid defeat in their final game against Shakhtar Donetsk, they will go into the draw for the knockout stage as group winners.

Goals from Antonio Valencia, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Nani and Emir Spahic OG earned the English side a comfortable three points and the double over the German club after a 4-2 win at Old Trafford on matchday one.

Wayne Rooney was influential in four of United’s goals as he continued his good form for the club. In the absence of Robin van Persie, the reds forward was one of the star performers for David Moyes in his first season in charge of the club.

It was Rooney who found Valencia in space early in the game as United broke the deadlock after 22 minutes.

Not long later, the Leverkusen’s deficit was doubled as Spahic put the ball through his own goal to add to the home side’s woes.

Midway through the second half, Evans was rewarded for coming forward for a United corner as he gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Rooney added a further assist with the fourth goal in the game as he set up Smalling for a simple finish from close range.

The match was wrapped up for the Manchester club when Nani rounded Leverkusen ‘keeper Bernd Leno before rolling the ball into an empty goal.

United are now 16/1 in the Bet365 Champions League markets. The draw for the next stage will be made later this month as the competition becomes a knockout tournament until a winner is crowned.
