The round of 16 lineup was confirmed on Thursday with PSV Eindhoven to meet Valencia CF, Manchester United FC to play Athletic Club and FC Twente to take on FC Schalke 04.

Manchester City FC will take on Sporting Clube de Portugal while Valencia CF play PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 after the last-32 ties concluded on Thursday night.

With the draws for both the round of 32 and round of 16 taking place at the same time in December, the victors already know their opponents next month. City ended FC Porto’s trophy defence on the sole game played on Wednesday and their reward is a meeting with another Portuguese side, Sporting, who came through against Legia Warszawa 3-2 on aggregate.

Manchester United FC survived a scare at Old Trafford, with Toby Alderweireld scoring late on to give AFC Ajax a 2-1 win on the night. However, a 2-0 first-leg triumph meant Sir Alex Ferguson’s side set up an engagement with Athletic Club, who went through on away goals against FC Lokomotiv Moskva despite being down to ten men.

Both PSV and Valencia enjoyed relatively comfortable passages against far less experienced rivals on the European stage. The Dutch side were 4-1 winners against Trabzonspor AŞ, who had a player sent off, while Unai Emery’s side collected a second 1-0 victory over Stoke City FC.

The club PSV share the Eredivisie lead with, AZ Alkmaar, also came through after winning 1-0 at RSC Anderlecht, eliminating the only side that had a perfect record in the group stage. They will take on Udinese Calcio, who matched their biggest margin of victory in Europe with a 3-0 success at PAOK FC.

After doing most of the hard work last week, Club Atlético de Madrid finished the job against S.S. Lazio, winning 1-0 to complete a 4-1 overall success. Midfielder Arda Turan, who was born in Istanbul, will be especially looking forward to their next tie, which is against Turkish side Beşiktaş JK.

After knocking out Club Brugge KV, Hannover 96 take on another Belgian side in R. Standard de Liège while FC Twente meet FC Schalke 04, who were involved in the only tie to go to extra time, against FC Viktoria Plzeň. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar completed a hat-trick to seal their progress.
