Premier League gameweek 14: Manchester City 1-3 Chelsea
Chelsea extended its winning streak to eight games after beating Manchester City in Manchester at the Etihad Stadium. The win places the London club with a three-point lead over Arsenal at the second place (before Liverpool plays). After a slow start, Conte’s men have found a very good rhythm with big results such as this one.
On the other side of the equation, Manchester City falls to 4th place in the table and after a stunning start with six consecutive wins, the club only has won three of their last eight games (a 3-3-2 record). The game finished in an ugly manner with Aguero and Fernandinho sent off for inproper conduct.
Chelsea’s Italian coach Conte comments on the win:
‘It’s a big win and a big result against a really strong team. With the quality of players in their squad I think it’s the most complete in this league. For this reason, I am pleased with the result, and with the players. They showed me great character.
We were lucky at the start of the second half because there was one crossbar, and also a good save from Thibaut kept the result at 1-0. Then we found great strength to score the goal to draw, and then to score the second goal and the third goal. It’s fantastic this because I repeat, it’s not easy to come here and win this game. Now we have to continue.
I’m happy because I always tell my players to be focused on the game on the pitch, and always to keep calm. It’s normal when you play these big games it’s not easy to keep calm in every single moment, but I’m pleased because all my players tried to keep calm.’
MCFC coach Guardiola reacts to the tough home loss:
“I say congratulations to Chelsea, but I’m proud of the we played, and we cannot forget against which team we played. We created more chances than we did in the games against Crystal Palace and Burnley.
“They had few chances but they scored from them. In the boxes we are not strong enough… especially here at home. The opponents, when they arrive they score, when we arrive sometimes not, mentally that’s tough.
We didn’t win because we missed a lot of chances not because of the referee.”
