Wright-Phillips, the MLS Golden Boot leader, continued his impressive goal-scoring streak against Arsenal on Saturday. After a Henry corner kick, centerback Ibrahim Sekagya headed the ball back across the face of goal to an open Wright-Phillips. Wright-Phillips redirected the header past Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to put the Red Bulls up 1-0 in the 32nd minute.
The Gunners nearly pulled one back just minutes after Wright-Phillips put the home side up. Jack Wilshere found himself in on goal and let rip a left-footed shot from just outside the six-yard box. Goalkeeper Luis Robles made a sprawling save with his right hand and deflected the ball safely over the end line as New York took a 1-0 lead into the break.
In the 51st minute, the Red Bulls captain and Arsenal legend left the field to a standing ovation as Peguy Luyindula came on as a substitute. Henry almost had a goal for himself in the fourth minute. The captain found himself in on goal down the left wing and bent a right-footed shot to the far post, but Szczesny was able to deflect the shot over the endline.
Robles made a big stop in the 79th minute to keep his team ahead 1-0. The goalkeeper had Arsenal’s Chuba Akpom streaking down on a breakaway down the left wing. Robles stood his ground and made a left-leg save on Akpom’s shot.
