Manchester United’s early-season woes deepened on Saturday as they suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur. The loss marked their third defeat in six Premier League matches, raising serious concerns about the direction of Erik ten Hag’s team. The result leaves the Red Devils languishing in 13th place in the Premier League table with just 7 points from seven matches.

From the opening minutes, Tottenham dictated the flow of the game, easily breaking down a disjointed United defense. The visitors took full advantage of United’s lack of cohesion and discipline at the back, scoring early and maintaining control throughout. To make matters worse, Bruno Fernandes was shown a red card at the end of the first half after a reckless challenge, leaving United down to ten men. Before the match, the BetOlimp soccer bets had already indicated a challenging fixture for United, with Tottenham offered favorable chances for a win, and United seen as challenging to trust by bookmakers.

The dismissal crippled any chance of a comeback, and United never recovered. The home side’s inability to mount any meaningful response left Old Trafford in stunned silence, with frustration evident among the supporters.

For Manchester United, the defeat represents a continuation of what has been a miserable start to the 2024/25 campaign. Questions are being asked about the lack of urgency in attack, the frailty in defense, and the decision-making in the transfer market. Despite heavy investment in players, United appear no closer to breaking the cycle of underachievement that has plagued the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Erik ten Hag reacts to the loss:  “We had too many mistakes and never got a foothold in the game. The press was no good in the first half. We conceded some counter-attacks after we countered and we made some very bad decisions when we had a lot of space. It was a bad start to the game. Tottenham were dominant. We couldn’t get the right press. We also made mistakes in possession. We couldn’t find the spare man; we couldn’t pass over the press.”

He added: “Still, we are in the game so we made some changes to strengthen the midfield and wait a little bit longer to press. Unfortunately, we conceded a second shortly after half-time. We shouldn’t concede so quickly. The goal, from a counter-attack, was a mistake. It shouldn’t happen. We have to talk to assess things.”

The United coach now faces mounting pressure to turn things around quickly. With each defeat, the club’s ambition of returning to the top of English football looks increasingly remote. Meanwhile, reinvigorated under Postecoglou, Tottenham continues its good early-season form and now looks like one of the genuine top-four contenders.
