Liverpool proved they are indeed over their bad patch of form with a deserved 2-0 victory over rivals Chelsea at Anfield.
Fernando Torres, who has struggled with injuries and form this season scored both goals as Liverpool stormed in to a first half lead.
With the game only eleven minutes old Dirk Kuyt, who had missed recent games through injury, lifted the ball over the Chelsea defence and picked out the run of Torres, who controlled brilliantly before lifting the ball over Petr Cech.
Just before half-time the Spaniard scored again, cutting inside the edge of the area from Raul Merieles’ pass before curling a world-class effort inside the far corner leaving Cech powerless.
Chelsea introduced the unfit Didier Drogba at half time for the unimpressive Salomon Kalou and his influence was obvious as the away side enjoyed the majority of possession, Liverpool’s defence, which has been their biggest problem this season, held out however for a moral boosting victory.
The result makes it four wins in a row for Roy Hodgson’s side who can finally now begin their season. With their next three games all being against teams currently in the bottom four, it’s fair to say Liverpool can make a genuine push towards the European places, particularly as they are currently level on points with top four contenders Tottenham.
Liverpool owner John W Henry has claimed the club’s lack of squad depth as one of their main problems and has pledged to address this problem in the January transfer window. If Hodgson is indeed given money to spend, a top four finish is not out of the question.
