Liverpool 3-2 Manchester City

Coach Liverpool Rodgers react:

“We don’t need to change, we play with no fear,” said the Northern Irishman. “We see that, no matter who we play, if it’s a big opponent like Manchester City, or Norwich next week. We’ll play with no fear. We demand to dominate the ball and work very hard. We don’t think too far ahead – that’s the message and that’s always been the message.

“With four games to go, there are still a lot of points to play for. And Manchester City have got a couple of games in hand as well. We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves and keep doing the job. Hopefully 10 games becomes 11 next week. We’ll just concentrate on the next game.” In the second half, you expect City to come back in. They are a wonderful team, the manager is an outstanding manager.

“Their first goal gave them momentum and then we were unfortunate to concede the second goal, which was an own goal. When it got to 2-2, they started to have a bit of energy and a bit of joy down the sides. So we changed – we went from a diamond to 4-3-3 to open up the game a little bit, but also to protect the sides whenever we were defending.

“That allowed us to get some sort of control back into the game and we end up getting the winning goal with a great finish. So it showed our resilience to see it through. That’s 10 wins now in the Barclays Premier League. It’s an incredible achievement and, against all the odds, we’re where we are and we’re still fighting.”

Coach City Pellegrini on the defeat and last title hopes vanished..

“We lost a game that we didn’t deserve to lose. We played very well in the second half and the last 15 minutes of the first half. We had clear chances to score.

“They started very well and scored an early goal and a second goal from a corner. It’s easy when you’re playing at home and you are two goals in front. But after that we rearranged things and had to clear chances to score ourselves. Mignolet saved from Fernandinho and the other from Vincent is off the line.

“In the second half there was just one side in it. We scored two goals and had two or three clear chances to score more and a very clear penalty when Skrtel handled, but we made a mistake and they won the game.”
