New York Red Bulls 1-1 Colorado Rapids
Forward Thierry Henry scored his first goal of the year, but it was cancelled out by a Vicente Sanchez penalty kick 72nd minute conversion as the New York Red Bulls (0-1-1, 1 pt.) settled for a 1-1 tie in the team’s home opener at Red Bull Arena against the Colorado Rapids.

Henry’s tally was his 42
nd in regular season play and put him in sole possession of second place in club history in that category (Juan Pablo Angel leads with 58). Giovanni Savarese is now in third place (41 goals).
New York had two early chances in the first half. In the second minute, Henry was freed down the right wing and crossed it towards the near post to Bradley Wright-Phillips. Wright-Phillips got a piece of it but Colorado defender Marvell Wynne did just enough to prevent the shot from going on target. Later, Armando headed a Henry free kick over the bar.On the other end, Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles made two excellent saves on a left-footed shot from Dillon Serna and a redirection from Jose Mari to keep the game scoreless. In the 33rd minute, Rapids midfielder Nick LaBrocca tried to chip Robles, but the Red Bull was back to tip it aside.

New York took the lead in the 57th minute. Sam had possession on the right wing and played a cross towards the back post that was headed in by a diving Henry.

However, Colorado tied the game in controversial fashion after referee Alan Kelly ruled that New York defender Jamison Olave fouled Marvin Chavez in the box. Robles guessed correctly on Sanchez’s try, but couldn’t reach the Colorado midfielder’s shot in the lower right hand corner of the goal.

The Red Bulls put up a late rally to try and take the three points. In second half stoppage time, Armando cut it back to Eric Alexander, whose shot whizzed just wide. Then, Richard Eckersley’s cross was met by Henry, but goalkeeper John Berner was there to make the save.
