Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, has once again spoken of his desire to fulfil his childhood dream of winning the Premier League title with Liverpool before his career comes to an end – but he has also outlined a more immediate target: to get the club back into the Champions League next season.
A promising start to the season, which has produced five wins from their opening seven league fixtures, sees them sitting level on points with Arsenal. With recent Liverpool sides tending to finish their campaigns in better form then they start them, Gerrard’s side could indeed be contenders in the football betting for a top-four slot when the season reaches its climax in May.
Certainly, with the form that Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez are showing at this early stage of their relationship, they are going to prove a nightmare for defences all season long. Should Rodgers manage to keep his first-choice midfield trio of Coutinho, Gerrard, and Lucas safe from harm, then the Reds might just prove a force to be reckoned with.
Liverpool’s captain is clear about one thing: come what may, he is no longer prepared to be looking up the table at Merseyside rivals, Everton, when the season winds to a close: “I’d never say never about our chances of winning the Premier League title, but if I’m being honest, that’s not the aim. The aim is for a top-four place – and to finish above Everton.”
Although Everton are enjoying a fine start to life under new manager, Roberto Martinez, the idea of Liverpool finishing lower in the table than them for a third straight season would be unthinkable for the majority of Reds’ fans who bet on football. However, with the two teams not scheduled to meet until the end of November, both sides’ fates are in their own hands for the time being.
