England 3-1 Slovenia

European Qualifier
Group E

Coach Hodgson:

“It was never going to be an easy game because they were disciplined and well organised and we didn’t create a lot of chances.

“When we went a goal down it was important we came straight back and we did that.

“In the end it was a very good victory. We have beaten Switzerland away and Slovenia at home and we are in a good position.”

He added: “We didn’t play our best football but we kept our shape well. We won the ball back quickly and sustained attacks.

“Three goals was more than enough to win the game.

“Our goal was to go into the New Year unbeaten and the only disappointment is that we cannot boast a clean sheet. “But we put the ball in our own goal and no opponent has scored against us!”

Wayne Rooney:

We all believe in each other, we believe in the ability we’ve got and we have to go and prove that as a team.”

“To get 100 caps for England (vs Slovenia), there’s not many players who have done it – it is a great achievement.

“I’ll be proud to join that club and is something that myself and my family would be honoured by.

“The highlight for me is that feeling you get after you’ve sung the national anthem – you run off and hear the crowd, particularly in the big games and the tournaments – you hear the support and you know what it means to the fans and the country.

I have that hunger to do well, I always want to do well I don’t feel I have to prove myself to anyone.

“I’m sure everyone can see I’m passionate about playing for England and as much as anyone I want us to do well.”
