Newspapers in England are reporting that Tottenham striker, Jermain Defo,e has agreed a move to Toronto FC on a £90,000 a week four-year contract.
Head coach, Ryan Nelsen, had been keen to add Defoe to his ranks in January as they bid for a spot in the play-offs next season. They are expected to pay £6 million in a transfer fee for the player in order for Spurs to let go of one of their assets.
Nelsen played with the England international during his spell at White Hart Lane and had made him his number one target ahead of the transfer window opening.
Fans who bet on soccer know that Defoe is desperate to be in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the World Cup next year in Brazil. Under Andre-Villas Boas at Tottenham, he has not been a regular starter in the Premier League. Most of his outings this season have either come in the League Cup or the Europa League.
The new MLS season does not begin until March so Defoe will have plenty of time to adapt into life in Canada. At the age of 31, the striker is now set to end his career at Toronto.
The sports betting reported plenty of interest in Defoe from several clubs in England, including from QPR who are now managed for his former boss Harry Redknapp. However, Nelsen was quick to tie down the player therefore had to offer him a lucrative contract.
Defoe dropped down the pecking order in North London when Tottenham signed Spaniard Roberto Soldado for £26 million in the summer.
The arrival of the Premier League man is likely to kickstart the introduction of at least two more high profile players to the Canadian club in 2014.
