Champions League semifinal return leg: Bayern Munich 2-1 Atletico

The away goal scored by Griezmann sends Atletico for another Champions League Final. Both teams missed a penalty, first Bayern Munich thought they had the 2-0 lead when a penalty was given to the Germans but Muller could not convert it. Torres also missed a penalty which would have sealed the tie with most of the second half still to play but he also failed in giving the for Atletico at 1-1. Bayern pressured hard Atleti’s defense in the lat 15 minutes of the game to get the third one but the Spaniard stood firm and get their shot to the most coveted club’s title.

Coach Atletico – Diego Simeone:

In the first half, we saw a formidable team. They had pressure, game, possession, aerial game and intensity. A fantastic first half from Bayern. We had little response to the situations they proposed. The second half was more even. We went out very well in the counter that resulted in the goal and that allowed us to have an advantage.

Regarding the errors on the penalties by Müller and Fernando Torres, he said: “Both were key. A missed penalty always implies several things. Their penalty would have put them 2-0 and made things very difficult for us. And later, with eight minutes to go until the end, it would have turned things around. The boys had a huge mettle at the end of the match. We go through to the final very happy.

Coach Guardiola – Bayern Munich

I gave my life for this team, I fought and did my best. We played as we wanted to play today. We came up one goal short. I’m sorry, especially for the players. Atlético punished us on the break. We tried everything. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. It’s bitter to be knocked out after a game like that. We can still finish the season celebrating. It’s a pity we haven’t rewarded ourselves for the last three years.”

forward Lewandowski added: We’re all lost for words after a match like that. We played fantastic football over the full 90 minutes. It’s bitter and frustrating. We can’t believe it. “It’s hard to accept. We’d have deserved to make it to the final.”
