Three minutes into their battle with Western Conference rival, Seattle Sounders, the Rapids went down a man after midfielder Brian Mullan broke the leg of Seattle’s Steve Zakuani.

“It was never my intention to injure him,” said Mullen, “I apologize and wish Steve a speedy recovery.”

The Rapids fought hard for the remainder of the game, possessing the ball for the majority, but were unable to score.  In the 19th minute Seattle’s Fredy Montero notched the game’s only goal, sliding the strike between the legs of Colorado’s keeper.

Zakuani was rushed to the hospital after sustaining his injury and underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured right tibia.  He will remain in Colorado for observation before rejoining his team in Seattle.

The Rapids will be in action Saturday, April 30th against the Chicago Fire at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.  With the Fire currently occupying the basement of the Eastern Conference, it looks to be a bounce back game for Colorado.
