It is highly likely that the 20,000th Premier League goal will be scored in the next week, with either Tuesday 20 or Wednesday 21 December the most probable dates.

Currently 19,964 Premier League goals have been scored, so there are 36 goals to go. As Premier League matches are averaging 2.96 goals a match this season the 20,000th is expected after Match Week 16 this weekend. There is a full Barclays Premier League card next midweek with two matches on the Tuesday, seven on the Wednesday and one on the Thursday.

On the day we will be working with the Press Association and Premier League Productions to track who has scored the 20,000th goal.

The scorer of the 20,000th Premier League goal will receive a cheque for £20,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, courtesy of our Title Sponsors Barclays. Barclays also gave cheques to the scorers of the 15,000th (Moritz Volz, Fulham) and 10,000th (Les Ferdinand, Tottenham Hotspur) Premier League goals.

The Barclays Press Office will also be circulating some statistics about the goal scoring records that have been set since the Premier League started in 1992/93.
