SANTA CLARA—Well, that didn’t take long.

Chris Wondolowski scored the go-ahead and eventual winning goal for San Jose in the 4th minute, thrilling the record-setting home crowd in a 1-0 victory against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The day was full of firsts, as newly signed designated player Geovanni made his San Jose debut, coming in as a substitute in the 72nd minute for Cornell Glen.

However, the gutsy performance by the Earthquakes stole the show and served notice to the entire MLS. It was in fact a case of déjà vu, with San Jose holding an early lead against their archrivals. However, this time, they were able to stymie the Galaxy.

As an impartial observer, on any given day, the Earthquakes can beat or lose against any team in the MLS. For the team to have any success going forward and in a possible playoff campaign, they will be keen to build upon this performance and continue to play physical soccer.

Does this team have what it takes to make a deep playoff run? The next few weeks will certainly show what this team is made of, and they will need to rely on Goalkeeper John Busch, as Joe Cannon suffered an ankle injury and is day-to-day. Additionally, the signing of Geovanni was tactical—opting for someone who can help them win rather than to fill additional seats.

The Earthquakes now sit at 8-6-5.
