DC United took the lead in the fourth minute. Fabian Espindola’s corner kick was flicked on to the back post by Bobby Boswell and midfielder Davy Arnaud was there to head it home.

New York’s best chance of the opening half came on the counterattack in the 41
st minute, as Lloyd Sam’s deep cross found an open Jonny Steele, who volleyed it off target from a tight angle.

The visitors were the stronger side coming out after the break, outshooting United 19-12 in the match, and controlled the rest of the contest. Four minutes following the break, Steele received a Thierry Henry pass in the left side of the box and put it just past the right post. Later, Kosuke Kimura got free down the right wing and his cross was headed high by Henry before Eric Alexander nearly tied the match, hitting a first time shot just over the top corner of the net.

New York continued to apply pressure on the hosts and goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra was called upon to make a saves on a United deflection in the 63rd minute and on Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty in the 70th minute. Dykstra was beat with 17 minutes to play, as Peguy Luyindula ripped it first time from 15 yards, but the ball pinged off the right post.
