It’s official. Thierry Henry is coming to America. New York Red Bulls announced today that the French striker has signed a multi-year contract with the club. Although Henry needs to wait until July 15, when the international transfer window opens, before he can join the team and compete in MLS, his debut is expected on July 22, when New York Red Bulls take on English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.

Best known for his superb performances with Arsenal, Henry also won a Champions League (with Barcelona in 2009), World Cup (with France in 1998) and Euro Cup (in 2000). Known for his leadership abilities, Henry was the captain of both Arsenal and the France national football team.

Henry will strengthen Red Bulls offensive line that failed to score in their last game against D.C. United. In the statement for the Red Bulls’ web site, Henry said that his main goal is to help the club win its first championship.

The Red Bulls are currently ranked second in the Easter Conference, two points behind Columbus Crew. The two teams will meet this Saturday, July 17, in a battle for the top spot. Henry’s first MLS game should come on July 22, when Red Bulls play against an exhibition game against Tottenham Hotspur, the historic rival of Arsenal…
