The national teams of Guyana and Mexico will face off in a World Cup qualifying match at BBVA Compass Stadium (www.bbvacompassstadium.com) on Friday, October 12th.  The match, which is the third international soccer event to take place this year at the downtown stadium, is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. with Guyana as the home team.

 

“Hosting a world cup qualifying game at BBVA Compass Stadium is very exciting for Houston-based soccer fans,” said BBVA Compass Stadium General Manager Doug Hall.  “We anticipate a sold-out crowd for this event and we are prepared to show these fans a first-rate experience.”

A press conference will be held at BBVA Compass Stadium on Thursday, October 4th at 11 a.m. featuring Miguel Trujillo , representing the Guyana Soccer Federation;Fernando Cerrilla, General Secretary of the Mexican Soccer Federation; Eduardo Beltramini, Planet Futbol;  Chris Canetti, President of the Houston Dynamo; and Doug Hall,General Manager of BBVA Compass Stadium.

The Guyana Golden Jaguars is one of three South American nations to be a member of the Caribbean Football Union of CONCACAF.  The team qualified for the Caribbean Nations Cup in 1991, coming in fourth.  Guyana has never qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup or the FIFA World Cup.  The team is led by midfielder/striker Shawn Beveney, who has been capped a total of 41 times, 19 of them as team captain.  He has a total of 22 goals for Guyana.
