Footballers who love to gamble

Professional footballers may well be some of the most well-paid individuals in the country, however that does not mean that they are adverse to the odd flutter. In fact, given the amount of free time that they get off, with most players finishing training by lunch time, it perhaps comes as little surprise that many have gone on to add to their extraordinary wealth thanks to gambling.

We have all heard about parents betting on their son or daughter to represent their country at some point in their life, although it rarely turns into anything worthwhile. However, former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland’s family won £10,000 when he represented England in a friendly against Greece. It was Kirkland’s father who had placed the bet some 12 years earlier, made even more impressive by the fact that it would be the only cap for the goalkeeper who would go on to play for Wigan Athletic and Leicester City.

Elsewhere, following their dramatic survival in the Premier League relegation battle back in 2013, Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley, who scored the goal to help them stay up, celebrated in style. The Scottish international headed to the casino where he was pictured covered in £50 notes. For those of us who can only dream of being in such a position, making the most of slot and poker games at certainly offers a more realistic alternative.

While there are a number of stories involving footballer’s blowing vast amounts of their fortunes, former Tottenham, Manchester United and England striker Teddy Sheringham was successful both on and off the field, pocketing $330,000 from various poker tournaments throughout Europe and America. For those that believe they can match Sheringham’s success, offer some of the best online poker games around. It is seemingly strikers that achieve the most success outside of the beautiful game, with former European Footballer of the Year Michael Owen well known for making a small fortune through his love of horse racing. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United man owns his own stables, with some of his prized assets featuring in some of the UK’s highest profile events.
