King Kewell the Greatest

Harry Kewell admitted that he was left humbled after being voted Australia’s greatest-ever footballer, a nod that fans who bet on Socceroos will no doubt agree with.

The forward clinched the award ahead of Socceroo team-mates, Mark Schwarzer, Tim Cahill and Lucas Neill, although, the trio did make it into the best-ever Australian starting 11.

With two World Cup campaigns among his 57 caps to date, Kewell has achieved more than any other Aussie has, and not many can argue against the former Leeds and Liverpool star winning the award.

“It’s an incredible honour to be named the Greatest Ever Australian Footballer,” Kewell said.

“I’m humbled by the award and very grateful, especially given that the public have had such a say in the final result and the number of great footballers this country has produced over the years.

“To be named amongst such great players in the Greatest Ever Australian Team, both past and current, is something I will never forget.”

As it currently stands, however, Australia’s greatest ever footballer is without a club.

After leaving the Melbourne Victory, in order to return to England for personal reasons, Kewell has so far failed to secure a move. The 33-year old is not thought to be short of offers, with a move depending on Kewell being able to fulfil some ambitions he still has.

He may be edging towards the end of his career, but the experienced forward showed last season in the A-League that he is still capable of producing moments of absolute magic.

The Premier League may be a step too far, at this stage in his career, but Kewell could definitely do a job for a Championship team.

It remains to be seen where the well-travelled Kewell does next rest his hat, but one thing is for sure, he can rightly now call himself his country’s best ever player.
