Community Shield –

Manchester United 2-0 Wigan Athletic (Van Persie scored both)

Coach Moyes’ reaction:

“This is a trophy for Sir Alex, so if he is sitting at home and watching today, this is for you Sir Alex and for the way your team performed last season and won the Premier League.

“The only way you get to the Charity Shield is by winning the league or the FA Cup, so Sir Alex’s team did that last year and the ones from now on will be hopefully for me to win.

“I’ve been here (Wembley) a few times, sometimes I have won and sometimes I have lost. But today, being the manager of Manchester United and leading the team out was something else and my family were here as well, so I’m sure they’ll be extremely proud.”

When quizzed on the performance of Van Persie, the boss was clearly delighted with the Dutchman and reiterated his belief that he will be central to any potential success this term.

“Because Robin was so important to United last year, we know that if we can get him in

goal scoring form then it gives us a great chance. If that’s the start for him, scoring two, then we are delighted and we hope it goes to a big total at the end of the season.”

“It does because I would have liked to continue getting to know them and getting to work with them,” he said.” I thought there were bits of our game that were better today and bits that we could do better, so I am looking forward to continuing working with them.

“And I am looking forward to improving the squad and attempting to make Manchester United even better than they have been in the last few seasons.”
