Ligue 1  week 3: AS Monaco 3-1 Paris Saint-Germain

For the second consecutive time, PSG has lost to Monaco after losing last year at home (0-2) towards the end of the season. More importantly, the transition with the new coach Emery and the post-Ibrahimovic era seems to take a little longer than expected to take off.

PSG have had all difficulties to come wit a win on week 1 at Bastia and did not produce a first-class football during week 2. Nonetheless, both game gave the 3 point to the team of the capital. Now, against a much better competition PSG conceded 3 goals which seems to be unreal… The international break comes at the best time for the team to re-focus before Champions League and Ligue 1 games resume.

PSG Coach Emery reacts on the loss:

“We started well with two good chances, but then Monaco scored with their first attack of the game, and they’re a side that know how to control a lead. They are very solid in defense, and we lost too many balls. In the second half, we came back to 2-1 and had chances to equalize, but then came that counterattack. After the third goal, the match was over.

It’s an experience for the future. I have confidence in the team. The players that played earned that right. I made changes to have more control of the game. We were tactically, a little unbalanced.”

AS Monaco coach – Jardim shares his joy:

“It was a great match from the players. We did what we needed to do to win against a big team, the champions. AS Monaco played better and won deservedly. We’re always happy to win against PSG. It’s not the first time. The team played well and deserved to win the game. Paris are still the strongest side in France. There’s no doubt about that.

I think we surprised them at the start of the game, by pressing high in particular and scoring early. What made the difference was the intensity, the dynamic of the players, the ability to press. Tomorrow, we’ll savor this August a little and get back to work quickly to prepare for September.”
