Ghana 2-0 Cape Verde

Substitute Mubarak Wakaso scored twice in the second half as Ghana beat Cape Verde 2-0 and book their place at the semi-final of the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations.

The Espanyol midfielder broke the deadlock from the spot on 53 minutes before sealing victory with the second goal in added-on time as the Black Stars triumphantly earned the tag of becoming the first team to reach the medal zone at the tournament.

The Blue Sharks were arguably the toughest test of the Ghanaians at the tournament in the match held at the Nelson Mandela bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

Post game reactions:

Kwasi Appiah (Head Coach, Ghana)
“The first half was okay. We were playing well until when we scored that some deficiencies set into our midfield. The mental attitude of the players was good. Cape Verde dominated the second half, but we stood up and got the win in the end.”

Asamoah Gyan (Ghana captain)
“We were expecting a difficult game. They were tactically disciplined, always behind the ball and relied on counter attack. What made the key was the penalty which opened the game. They dominated the second half, but we kept our composure. Our experienced was put to bear.”

Lucio Antunes (Head Coach, Cape Verde)
“I’m very disappointed. We played well in the second half but couldn’t score. We are as good as any of the best teams at the tournament. We will go home and follow the tournament back home.”
