Torres relishing pressure

Chelsea striker Fernando Alonso is confident that he can fill the void left by Didier Drogba and score the goals to carry the Blues to Barclays Premier League glory this season.

The Spaniard is now his side’s senior striker following the departure of the talismanic Ivorian to China and certainly has massive boots to fill after Drogba’s last act for the club was to score the winning penalty in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in May.

Torres, a favourite of the online betting community, made a huge impact when coming off the bench in that game and has recently shown signs of returning to the form that made him one of the game’s most deadly strikers during his time at Liverpool.

The 28-year-old had a difficult first 18 months to life at Stamford Bridge after his move from Anfield in January 2011 and spent most of time sat on the bench, due to coaching staff’s preference to Drogba.

However, since the departure of the Ivorian, Torres now has much more responsibly on his shoulders and has been charged with the task of scoring the goals that will take Roberto Di Matteo’s young side to glory.

Despite the extra pressure, the Spanish international is not concerned by his status as the club’s senior striker and is relishing the challenge of helping his side to compete in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

“Didier is not here anymore, so there is more responsibility for me and I’m ready for the challenge,” the 28-year-old admitted in the Daily Star Sunday.

“Now, I am looking for new personal targets, like getting as many goals as possible – hopefully more than in my best season at Liverpool .”
