Mourinho starts his Man Utd’s career with a win
Premier League fixture 1: Bournemouth 1-3 Manchester United
[on his happiness] “The three points, the quality of our attacking football, the quality of our control, the quality of us defensively – we were very compact. It’s three points against a very difficult opponent and I don’t think there’s any doubt we deserved to win.
“One goal changes the picture as in the beginning of the second half they tried to put more pressure on us, which opened more spaces. The opening goal is always important – it doesn’t mean you win the match but on a psychological level it brings the confidence up and the team could play very well in the second half.
“It’s the Premier League and one mistake is punished. When they scored, I had to change the shape to get more control. If they score again for 3-2, we have a nightmare in the last minute, so I have to have control – but even that was a good experience for us.”
Wayne Rooney shares also his views:
“It’s always important to win your first game. I thought we played some good stuff, especially in the second half. There was some good build-up play and counterattack play. I thought we deserved to win,” he said.
It’s always nice when you’re scoring. I had a couple of chances and maybe could have got one more, but I was pleased with my overall performance and getting the goal and the three points.
I believe in my own ability, I’m confident and I believe I’m good enough to play. And if I play where I played today I’ll score goals. I hope so, he added, when asked if there was a lot more to come from the Reds. Some players are still getting up to full fitness in the first game of the season. You’re never quite where you want to be, I’m sure that will come after a few games. We know we can play better than we did today [Sunday], although we did quite well, and I’m sure we will over the coming weeks.”
