Arsenal’s summer of spending

Arsenal’s title challenge has all but capitulated after their 3-0 away defeat to Everton. The back-end of the season has highlighted the lack of strength in the Arsenal squad and it is apparent that this is not a side capable of winning the Premier League. To rectify the situation Arsene Wenger knows that he is going to need to spend big, so who could be on the Frenchman’s radar?

Iker Casillas

Online website, SportinaStorm.com, reported that Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has been trying to persuade his fellow Spaniard Casillas to join the Gunners. The 32-year-old ‘keeper is currently languishing on the bench at Real Madrid and is believed to open to a departure. As for Arsenal, questions remain about Wojciech Szczesny, the Pole is a talented shot-stopper but can often be erratic. If you want to win titles you need a goalkeeper that is reliable and can be depended on, something that Casillas can offer. His age could prove a stumbling block but his ability could make Wenger think twice.

Jackson Martinez

Arsenal have been caught lacking up-front too many times this season. Olivier Giroud has 13 league goals this season which is respectable but not brilliant. With Wenger having to turn to untested striker Yaya Sonago it really shows the lack of depth in the Arsenal striking department. The Porto striker wants to play in the Premier League and has indicated that he would happily join Arsenal. A strong centre-forward who draws comparisons to the great George Weah, Martinez could really be the missing element in the title winning formula.

Marco Verratti

Arsenal’s biggest weakness this season has been their fragile midfield. Offensively they are brilliant but when trying to defend they just get brushed aside, only Mathieu Flamini looks willing to tackle and take a blow. PSG midfielder Verratti has been linked in a £17million move to Arsenal and a player of that skill-set is of paramount importance to the Gunners. They need a ball-winning midfielder, someone who can sit deep and let the attack-minded players flourish. Verratti or Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin would add some mettle to the fragile Gunners midfield which could be the catalyst for a successful title push next year.

Whether or not Wenger is at Arsenal in the summer is unbeknownst to us but what is for sure is that the North London club need a splurge. If they buy well then they can win the league but if they just bring in one player then they will stand no chance.
