Reports have emerged that Arsenal have cast their eye upon Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder, Bastian Schweinsteiger. Following the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and Samir Nasri to Manchester City, the gunners suddenly find themselves shorthanded in midfield.

Schweinsteiger, who is capable of lending support in attack and bolstering defense, apparently has impressed Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and the Frenchman is allegedly readying a bid of some 35 million pounds for the 27 year old. Schweinsteiger has reportedly become disenchanted with his current employers, Bayern Munich, and is thought to be looking towards the Premier League as a way out, with title contenders Manchester United also thought to be a possible destination.

With his versatility, strength and ability to score from distance, Schweinsteiger could go a long way towards solving the Gunners midfield doldrums and quieting the complaints of pundits and supporters who have grown frustrated with Wenger’s seeming unwillingness to spend big to bring in established talent to replace major key players who have departed the squad this summer like Fabregas, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri. A box-to-box midfielder with a commendable work rate and a knack for visionary passing, Schweinsteiger would appear to be a perfect tincture for Arsenal’s badly bleeding midfield.

Having taken in some 35 million pounds for Fabregas and with the Nasri sale expected to bring in another 24 million, Arsenal certainly have the transfer kitty to work with. Up until now, Wenger has chosen to expend his resources on largely unproven talent like teenage former Southampton winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and former Lille forward, Gervinho. Signing an established, marquee player like Scheinsteiger would be a statement of intent from Wenger that would certainly sit well with the Emirates faithful.
